We know that several hundred people "flipped a bird" last weekend at FRC in South Florida as part of the Thanksgiving frozen turkey drive, and now here at FRC-Lima we're using the whole month of November to collect canned and non-perishable food for our Lima Thanksgiving Food Drive. Please bring your donations of canned and non-perishable food to FRC-Lima every Sunday morning in November, and please be generous! All food will be distributed to needy individuals and families in Lima on December 1. It's Election Day in the USA. God already knows who's going to win and become the next US President. Whether you are supporting Obama or McCain, and whether your candidate wins or loses, it's important to remember the words of Paul in Romans 13:1 (NIV), "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God." Pray for the winning candidate, even if you didn't vote for him. He's going to need it.

Halloween Outreach - Children's Costume Party

We had a blast on Saturday afternoon at our Halloween Outreach/Children's Costume Party at KFC in Lima! Between children and adults, there were about 70 in attendance. The kids had a ball. There were songs, dance, games, contests, fried chicken, french fries and, of course, lots of Halloween candy! Right before the party started, a very strong 4.3 earthquake tremor rocked all of Lima! It was quite a jolt for the kids who had arrived early, and some of them even thought that it was part of the special effects for the party!

Today I want to give a shout-out to all the leaders and volunteers who serve so faithfully at FRC-Lima. Yesterday there was a film festival at the cinema complex where we have FRC-Lima, and so we were prohibited from using the lobby or the children's ministry cinema. But our leaders and volunteers were up to the challenge! We put a smaller-scale Information Table right in the passageway leading into the cinema where we have our worship service, and we rented out the 2nd floor of McDonald's for the children's service! Happy Meals and all! The kids had a ball. I especially want to thank everyone in the Pre-School and Children's Ministry and on the First Impressions team for an above-and-beyond effort and execution on Sunday. Great job, everyone!

Ceremony With The President

Today we attended a ceremony with the President of Peru, Alan Garcia.

For the past three years, the evangelical church community in Peru has hosted a Ceremony of Thanksgiving in honor of Peru Independence Days at the end of July, and each year President Garcia has attended. Garcia is the first Peruvian President to have truly reached out to the evangelical church community here, and he maintains good relations with the evangelical community in Peru. Dorcas and I have been blessed to attend each of the past three ceremonies with President Garcia.

Being at the ceremony with President Garcia reminded me that we must always be praying for our leaders, whether we agree with their politics or not. Those of you in the USA need to be praying - now - for the next President, whomever it may be. God already knows who will win in November. Be praying that the winner seeks God's wisdom and discernment in all the decisions that he must make as President.

We're having a great time these days with the 16 FRC high school students who are visiting us here in Lima along with Pastor Garland, Pastor Bob, and Holly. On Friday the students had an outreach at a local English language insitute, then on Saturday they spent the day with our friends at the orphanage in La Victoria, then spent Saturday night at the jazz club where we have The Rd., and then on Sunday morning they helped us out at FRC-Lima as ushers, greeters, singers, musicians, and with the set-up and tear-down. The high school group is doing a great job here in Lima. FRC students rock!

We've been having a great time with Pastor Troy and his family here in Lima. Last night we had a wonderful dinner and meeting with some of the leaders of FRC-Lima, and Pastor Troy challenged all of us to dream big and to make an impact not just here in Lima, and not just here in Peru, and not just here in South America, but worldwide! God has blessed FRC-Lima in so many different ways, with great leaders, great volunteers, great worship, a great location in the cinema, and some great TV publicity recently on Panorama, and now it's up to us to leverage that blessing into making a worldwide impact! Shake, Rattle, & Roll!

Saturday morning Peruvians were jolted out of bed by an earthquake tremor which registered 4.7 on the Richter Scale. It was a fairly long jolt, as far as tremors go, lasting several seconds. Our apartment building swayed and shook, and the window panes clattered noisily.

Flamingo Road Church is one church where you are, but I can tell you that there is one big difference between FRC in South Florida, and FRC in Peru. In South Florida, there are hurricanes, but you can prepare for a hurricane. You always know a couple of days in advance when it's coming. With an earthquake, or even a tremor, there's no warning! You can't prepare for it! You feel the earth move under your feet, you shake, rattle, and roll, and you hope and pray that you can live to tell about it. That's just one of the differences we face here at FRC-Lima.

Unchurched, Unreached, Uncontacted

Just as we were returning from Iquitos this week, the news broke about the discovery of a new tribe living on the border of Peru and Brazil. This tribe had never been seen before and had never been contacted before by outsiders from what we would define as modern civilization.

Photos which were published in Peru newspapers and which were broadcast on Peru TV news stations showed members of the tribe, probably a remnant of the Mashco Piros or Murunahuas, covered in red paint and aiming their bows and arrows at the airplane which was flying high above them.

It was a fascinating discovery, and it makes us think of our role as a church. We must always be striving to reach out to those who are unchurched, whether they live in a large, noisy, thriving metropolis like Lima, or whether they are a tribe that no one has ever seen before, living on the border of Peru and Brazil. As we build new small groups in Iquitos, and pray and dream of a full campus there someday, and continue to minister and partner with the Yagua tribe there, it fills us with excitement to think that perhaps someday FRC-Lima or FRC-Iquitos will be partnering with this lost tribe to help them reach their God-potential.

The doctors will need to operate on her, but first they are trying to determine why she is bleeding on her brain. It is a very delicate situation. International Economic Summit In Lima

There is an international economic summit in Lima this week, featuring presidents and leaders from several countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the European Union. Among the leaders attending the summit in Lima this week are Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, President of Argentina; Alvaro Uribe, President of Colombia; Evo Morales, President of Bolivia; Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela; Rafael Correa, President of Ecuador; Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany; and Carlos Lage Davila, Vice President of Cuba. Many of the conferences are taking place at the Country Club Hotel, located just a few blocks away from our apartment.

The city is at a standstill because of the summit. Schools and government offices are closed, as are many stores and businesses. Street are also closed for blocks all around the various summit meeting places. Security forces, the national police, and the military are on every street corner.

We need to pray for all of these leaders, whether we agree with their politics or not. God has allowed them to be in the high positions that they are in.

Romans 13:1 - NIV - "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God."

Please pray that all of these authorities, as established by God, seek His wisdom and guidance and discernment in all of their decisions, both during the summit and afterward.

In The Name Of Love

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the death of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and we want to pause for a moment to remember Dr. King and the civil rights battle that he undertook before he was felled by an assassin's bullet on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

When I think of Dr. King, I am reminded of two verses:

Revelation 7:9 (NIV) - "I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people, and language."

Galatians 3:28 (NIV) - "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

Heaven will be a rainbow of colors, featuring people from every nation, race, and ethnicity, and all because of the fact that we are all one in Christ Jesus. Such Christ-centered unity was the hallmark of Dr. King, and it is what he fought and died for, all in the name of love.

2 Earthquakes Rock Lima!

Two earthquakes rocked Lima today!

At 1:40 AM this morning there was a short quake, probably 5-10 seconds long, which registered 4.3 on the Richter Scale. Then, at 7:51 AM this morning, there was a longer, much more intense earthquake, probably close to 30 seconds long, and which registered 5.3 on the Richter scale.

There are reports of injuries and collapsed homes and buildings in Lima. The earthquakes also caused a rockslide along the Costa Verde, near Larcomar and La Rosa Nautica, which closed roads along the ocean. In our home, books fell off of the shelves and pictures fell off of the walls, but there was no major damage.

Living in Lima is a little bit like living in California, and every time there is a tremor or an earthquake here, I am always reminded of the words of Jesus which are found in Matthew 24:7-8 (TNIV), "There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains (i.e., signs of the end times)."

Favoritism & Discrimination

43 Baptisms at FRC-Lima!

We have had two baptisms here in Peru over the past two weeks, one in the Amazon River and another in the Pacific Ocean, and over the course of the past year we now have baptized a total of 43 people here at FRC-Lima!

We are so excited for every single person who we have baptized. On Saturday we had our latest baptism in the Pacific Ocean, and an 8-month pregnant woman was among those being baptized!

(Note: That leads me to ask this question - does her baptism count as one or two? Just kidding!)

Baptism is a public display of a private choice that one has made to follow Christ. We want to congratulate all 43 of the people who have been baptized at FRC-Lima over the course of the past year, and we can't wait to baptize many, many more!

Beach Baptism This Saturday!

How God Saved Us On The Amazon River

On Thursday a boat on the Amazon River, carrying 37 American tourists, crashed into a large tree trunk which was floating under water, down the river, as is common during the rainy season. The large tree trunk ripped a huge gash along the bottom of the boat, and the 37 tourists had to flee to the life boats in the minutes before the boat sank. Thankfully, everyone made it out alive, albeit somewhat shaken up.

That is exactly what happened to us on Tuesday!

If you go back and read my blog from Tuesday, March 4, the day of our Amazon River baptism, you will read a little bit about our adventures returning to the port of Iquitos after the river baptism. The Amazon was chock-full of large tree trunks, long tree limbs, and huge, car-size knots of weeds and long grass, all of which go sailing down the river during the rainy season as the water level rises approximately 50 feet.

The motor to our boat conked out when it slammed into the tree trunk floating underwater. In the muddy Amazon, you can't see a thing under the water. It's like looking into a glass of chocolate milk! But as we read about how Thursday's boat sank, we see the mighty hand of God and how He protected us from a similar fate on Tuesday afternoon. We, too, had more than 30 people on board our boat, between FRC-Lima people and the members of the Yagua tribe, and we, too, crashed into a tree trunk floating underwater.

Didn't Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet go through something like this?

In all seriousness, I believe that the enemy was trying to knock us out after our glorious and victorious Amazon River baptism, but God stepped in, got us safely to the side of the river, and kept our boat afloat until a new motor arrived. That is the power of God, and that is how He saved us on the Amazon River!

More About The Amazon River Baptism

We are still in awe at what God accomplished on Tuesday in the Amazon River as we baptized 13 people.

Please continue to pray for the 13 people who were baptized, and also please pray for the entire Yagua tribe. Through the church we started in the jungle for them, and through our literacy campaign with them, plus with this baptism, we have been able to show the love of Jesus Christ to them in some very tangible ways, and it has given us a huge open door with them, and hopefully as well with other tribes in the future. Unreached people are unreached people, whether they live in South Florida, Lima, or the Amazon jungle.

The team that we brought to the jungle from FRC-Lima, 8 people in all, did a fantastic job. They really caught the fever about service and reaching the unreached. We're already planning additional mission trips back to Iquitos, with the idea of growing our partnership with the tribes there, and also with the vision for planting an FRC campus on the Plaza de Armas in the city center in Iquitos. They have a 4-cinema movie theater one block from the city center, and one day it may become another FRC campus in Peru!

Thanks again to everyone who was praying for us in the jungle. God heard and answered your prayers, and He covered us with His mighty hand of blessing, favor, and protection, and the Yaguas and all of us at FRC-Lima will never forget how God's presence completely and utterly surrounded us and filled us as we baptized 13 people in the deep, muddy waters of the Amazon River.

An Amazing Amazon River Baptism!

Today we had our Amazon River baptism, and it was one of the most amazing and unforgettable days of my life!

We baptized 13 people today in the Amazon River. 11 were men and women from the Yagua tribe, and 2 were members of FRC-Lima.

We started out this morning by meeting the Yagua tribe at the Port of Iquitos. As mentioned, 11 of them were going to be baptized, and another dozen or so of the Yaguas also came along to be part of the historic occasion. We all got in a large dugout canoe, with a roof made of palm leaves, and we took a 30-minute ride down the Amazon River together to the site of the baptism, in the port of a small pueblo called Barrio Florida.

Once we arrived in Barrio Florida, we all got off the boat and were met by a couple of local ladies selling coconuts, which they promptly whacked open for us with the sharp machetes they were carrying. We drank a toast of coconut water to the baptism candidates, then I led in a time of prayer, then the Yagua women led us in a glorious time of worship, then I gave the baptism candidates some instructions on what to do when I dunked them, and then we headed back down to the river.

The Amazon River is big, brown, and very muddy. It is like walking into chocolate milk. As soon as I stepped into the river, I sank in mud up to my ankles, even though I was wearing sneakers for better traction in the river. During the entire time of the baptism, I had to keep moving my feet around, so that I wouldn't get stuck in the mud. Pastor Samuel helped me baptize each of the 13 people. He is the pastor of our daughter church in Iquitos which we started for the Yaguas and the Boras. He and I had to hold on tight to each person as they waded into the muddy Amazon waters. We were waist-deep in the big Amazon muddy.

As we began the baptism, a crowd of about 100 people from Barrio Florida came over to watch what we were doing. They were absolutely fascinated by the baptism. As each person entered the water, our group of FRC-Lima folks and Yaguas broke out into worship, then we baptized each person, and then they were serenaded with more worship when they left the water.

The presence of God was so strong around us during every single minute of the baptism. We could practically hear the saints and angels looking down at us and cheering from heaven.

God also protected us from any nearby anacondas, crocodiles, or piranhas. I did feel a few nips around my lower legs at different moments during the baptism, but thankfully I'm still all in one piece!

The boat ride back to the Port of Iquitos was quite a trip! The motor broke on our boat, and so we had to sit and wait for 3 hours on the banks of the Amazon until another boat came along with a replacement motor for us. Then we had to proceed at a snail-like speed back to the port, due to all of the logs, weeds, and other assorted flotsam and jetsam which clogged the river as we putt-putted back to the port, going against the ultra-strong Amazon current.

Today also was the 35th birthday of our friend, Ricardo, who is one of the spiritual leaders of the Yaguas, so tonight we invited Ricardo, his wife, Keli, and his little son, Alex, to dine with us in Iquitos, in celebration of his birthday and the awesome Amazon River baptism today. We're going to be posting a video of the baptism on YouTube within the next few days, so be on the lookout for it.

Revelation 7:9 tells us that there will be people from every nation, tribe, people, and language in heaven. Today we saw a little bit of that as all of us, from FRC-Lima and from the Yagua tribe, stood shoulder-to-shoulder and arm-in-arm and praised our God together, worshipped our God together, and participated together as brothers and sisters in Christ in the most amazing baptism that I've ever been a part of.

Off To Iquitos!

Sunday afternoon, right after the services at FRC-Lima, we're off to the airport to go to Iquitos for our Amazon River baptism!

There's a group of 8 of us from FRC-Lima going on the trip. We'll arrive in Iquitos late Sunday afternoon, and probably attend a CMA church service in Iquitos on Sunday night. On Monday we're going to have a time of visitation and ministry with both the Yagua and Bora tribes, and get them ready for the baptism. On Tuesday we'll have the baptism! We return to Lima on Wednesday night, and then we'll put together a YouTube video of the baptism so that all of you can see it! Please pray for us as we go to Iquitos for the Amazon River baptism, that God covers us with His mighty hand of blessing, favor, and protection!

A Conversation With The Chief Of The Boras!

On Thursday night at about 9:00 PM the phone rang in our home here in Lima, and on the other end of the line was my friend, Liborio, the chief of the Bora tribe in Iquitos!

On one of our prior trips to Iquitos I gave Liborio my FRC business card and also gave him our home phone number, then yesterday someone loaned him a cellphone, and so he called me from the jungle!

It was great to hear from Liborio. He is a young man, probably around 30 years old. His father had been the chief of the Boras for many years, but then his father died, and his father selected Liborio, from among all his sons, to be the new chief of the Boras after his death.

We talked about our trip to Iquitos next week, and the Amazon River baptism that we will have on Tuesday, March 4. Liborio was very excited to talk about the trip and the baptism, and he will be making sure that the Boras are well represented at the baptism.

It's not every day that you receive a phone call from the chief of a native tribe in the Amazon jungle, and so yesterday's phone call was something very special!

We had a fantastic VBS@KFC this week!

Close to 100 kids attended over the course of 3 afternoons, and 28 kids accepted Christ! Mariana and her team did an absolutely awesome job putting it all together, and the kids (and parents) loved every minute of the singing, dancing, playing, drawing, coloring, learning, and eating!

We're going to have our next VBS@KFC in July, during the school vacation time which occurs around Fiestas Patrias at the end of that month. Mark your calendar now, and be sure to join us for the sequel to the coolest VBS anywhere!

VBS@KFC is ready to rock and roll!

Tomorrow, February 25, is our big kick-off. We have already got a ton of kids signed up to be part of the coolest VBS ever, full of fun, games, music, dance, video, Bible lessons, and of course fried chicken!

VBS@KFC runs from 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. on February 25-27 at the KFC on Av. Comandante Espinar 240 in Miraflores. We're already jam-packed with kids, but we may be able to shoehorn in one or two more if you still want to register at the door. We'll see you on Monday at 4:00 P.M. for all the fun and games at VBS@KFC!

All Kinds Of Baptisms!

Yesterday was a historic day at Flamingo Road Church, as a woman named Alyssa became the first person ever to be baptized as part of the Internet campus!

Alyssa was in Georgia; her stepmother-in-law, Lisa, physically baptized her; Alyssa's bathtub was used as the baptistry; and FRC Internet Pastor Brian Vasil presided over the baptism from the FRC main campus in Cooper City, Florida!

It's amazing and exciting to see how we can use and leverage modern technology for God's glory!

It's also amazing and exciting to see the many different ways in which FRC is now baptizing people. Cooper City and other Florida campuses use the traditional baptismal pool; the Internet campus does it featuring the Internet Pastor in Cooper City and the baptism candidate somewhere else in the world; and here in Peru we use the Pacific Ocean and the Amazon River! In fact, in just 2 weeks we'll be baptizing a group of native tribespeople from 2 tribes in the Amazon River, and in just 4 weeks we'll be baptizing another group of FRC-Lima folks in the Pacific Ocean!

Whether it's via the Internet, or in a baptism pool, or in the Pacific Ocean, or in the Amazon River, God is always smiling any time that one of His children is submerged into water and then rises up afterward, echoing what Jesus did for us 2,000 years ago.
